Recently Used Programs on Start Menu - clearing for new users

$

When a new user logs into our RDS environment, a roaming profile is created for them.  However, the Start Menu shows recently used programs (Notepad, Internet Explorer, and Command Prompt).  Notepad and Internet Explorer even shows Recent files if you hover over the small arrows pointing to the right.

How do I get rid of this for all users?  Is it under C:\Users\Default?  Registry?  GPO?

Our RDS environment is Windows 2008 R2

Thin Clients that work with Windows 2012 Remote Desktop Services

I have successfully set up Windows 2012 with Hyper-V running RDS and have connected several windows clients to the virtual desktop session.  I have not been so successful with several other devices including a wyse device from a simular Citrix solution and both Android and Apple tablets.  My question has two parts.  Is there documentation that describes the interaction between the client and the server during the connection process and is there a list of thin client devices that are supported....

2012 RDS: Non-Administrators can not access VDI pool

$

I am currently setting up server 2012 VDI using 2 servers. A connection broker, web access, licenseing server and a VM Host server. I have followed the wizards, created my master image, created the collection, and setup group policy to add the group I want to give RDS access to Allow log on through terminal services & Remote Desktop Users group.

When I connect using my admin account everything works, it connects to the connection broker and then forwards to one of the running VMs.

When I connect using a non-admin account I am prompted with: The connection was denied because the user account is not authorized for remote login. I also get the following in the event log:

TerminalServices-SessionBroker

RD Connection Broker failed to process the connection request for user ***\****.
Failed to find Resource Plugin OR an end point for the user.
Error: Access is denied.

TerminalService-SessionBroker-Client

Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed while getting redirection packet from Connection Broker.
User : ***\****
Error: Element not found.

--

Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed to redirect the user ***\****
Error: NULL

I searched the internet high and low and I can not figure this out. I have even put the the non-admin users in the remote desktop users on the server just to see what would happen, same results if trying to connect to the pool. But I am able to connect directly to the server. I am also able to directly connect to a VM in the pool using a non-admin account.

Any help would be appreciated.

RDC could not find destination computer launching remote apps, pooled VM's working...

Hi i'm going mad can someone please point me in the right direction.

I have a single server running 2008 R2, 8 cores, 16gb, dual nics, this is configured as;

- Hypervhost01.domain.domain.co.uk (hyper-v, rd session host in redirection for vm pools) 192.168.0.13 + 192.168.0.210 for vmnetwork
   - tag.domain.domain.co.uk (rd connection broker, rd gateway, rdweb) 192.168.0.17 vmnetwork
   - webapps.domain.domain.co.uk (rd session host) 192.168.0.211 vmnetwork
   - xpvmpool (3 xp systems) dhcp
   - win7vmpool (3 win7 pro systems) dhcp

I can get the remote desktops to connect directly and via rdweb and they appear to be working on the lan without any problems, no matter what I do I can not get a remote app to launch.

I can add and remove them, they appear in rdweb, the connection fires up and then throws the error - Remote Desktop Connectio could not find the destination computer.  This can happen if the computer name is incorrect or the computer is not yet registered with Session Broker.  Try connecting again, or contact your network administrator.

On the Broker server the event log for TerminalServices-SessionBroker shows 3 entries

Event 800
RD Connection Broker received connection request for user DOMAIN\user.
Hints in the RDP file (TSV URL) = tsv://VMResource.2
Initial Application = rdpinit.exe
Call came from Redirector Server = webapps.DOMAIN.DOMAIN.CO.UK
Redirector is configured as Virtual machine redirector

Event 804
RD Connection Broker could not find an assigned Personal Desktop for user DOMAIN\user. HRESULT = 0x80070001

Event 802
RD Connection Broker failed to process the connection request for user DOMAIN\user.
Failed to find Resource Plugin OR an end point for the user.
HRESULT = 0x80070001.

There are no personal desktops, there are only the pools, the webapps server has never been told about the existance of personal or pooled desktops.  The other event logs have no entries happen at the same time or within a few mins of the above error.

All the applications and desktops are set to run through rdgateway.domain.domain.co.uk and if I open an https connection to the address I get a credential prompt and after entering the username it gives a blank page as expected.  Removing rdgateway from the app manager makes no difference and it will be needed later as I have to publish via ISA2006.

hypervhost01 session brokers group has tag in it, web access computers has tag in it.
webapps TS Web Access group has tag in it.
tag session brokers group has hypervhost, tag and webapps in it, web access computers has tag in it.

I don't know why hypervhost has a local session brokers group.  All of the VM machines including the servers have been configured with the powershell script.

Anyone got any suggestions please, I have been on this project 3 weeks now and formatted the server twice trying to get to grips with RDweb and publishing it to the outside world.

Deploying Managed Pool Breaks Adobe Reader 11

I am trying to set up managed pools for VDI in RDS.  I have RDS installed and functional on a Windows Server 2012 Datacenter machine, and I have successfully created Windows 7 template machines and deployed pools from them.  I have even managed to make changes to the pools with the recreate functions.  I have done most of this without finding great documentation.  That having been said, I am having an issue that I'm not sure how to deal with thatadequate documentation probably wouldn't help with.  I have installed Adobe Reader 11 on a virtual desktop template and created a pool from it.  When I connect to that pool and try to launch Adobe Reader, I get an error that says only: "An internal error occurred."  Adobe Reader does not launch.  I assumed this was a problem with the installation or something sysprep did, so I booted up the template and went through the OOBE.  Once booted, I could launch Adobe Reader with no problem.  IOW, this issue only exists when I deploy a managed pool, but not on the base image the managed pool was deployed from.  Note that I would prefer to keep everything on the VDI image and not mess with RDSH or App-V.  Does anyone have any suggestion on how to deal with this?

Hello. I have an x64 Windows Server 2008 Terminal Server running Office 2007 Professional. When my users try to send a fax it points them to the Windows Contacts folder and not the Outlook Address Book. Outlook is set to the default for everything in Default Programs. Ths feature works fine on our Vista machines, just not on this server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How do I change the URL to the Remote Web Access server in Windows Server 2012?

$

Hallo!

I have set up a Remote Dexktop Service using the "Quick" deployment method in Server Manager and everything is working greate internally, but I cannot start an app published in Remote Web Access from outside our network.

The problem is that it wants to start the using the internal URL, for example, server.domain.local, instead of the external one, for example remote.server.com.

I therefore want to know how I can change the default URL for the Remote Web Access server and all the Remote Web Apps in Windows Server 2012?

I have allready looked in Server Manager and I can change some of the deployment settings in server manager, but there is no way to alter the URL of the Remote Web Access server. See below images:

Edit deployment step 1

Edit deployment step 2 try to change the url

Pressing the internal URL only results in opening the internal URL.

This was very simple to do in Windows Server 2008 R2 using the tsconfig tool, but it does not seam to be any way of solving this in server manager.

A possible sollution would be to alter the registry someware in HKLM->Software->Microsoft->Windows NT->Terminal Services. But this can easaly lead to problems due to wrong format, etc. and is probably not supported.

Is there a simpler and supported way?

Change hostname of session host server in rd web

Hi,

Using windows server 2012, how do i change the hostname that the users connect to when using eg a published remoteapp? It defaults to the sever fqdn, eg, rdsh.corp.example.com, which isn't really available from the outside. I want it to connect directly to rdsh.example.com.

This was possible to set in windows 2008 r2 Remoteapp Manager. under "RD SEssion Host Server" and "Connection Settings".

Where is this setting in 2012?

Thanks

Failed to ReCreate Some Virtual Desktops in VDI Pool

$

I am running Server 2012 Datacenter.  I have a VDI pool with 10 desktops.  For the sake of simplicity, we'll say they are named Desktop-0 through Desktop-9.  Whenever I need to modify the template, I use the "Recreate All Virtual Desktops" task.  Usually, this works fine, but I need to know what to do when it gets interrupted.  Because, for instance, Windows Server Backup will interrupt it, and certain other tasks can interrupt it as well.  Today's attempt to do the recreate left two desktops missed because users were logged into them and they didn't get logged out before something else caused an interruption.  I can still view the task status details, but they go away every time Windows Server Backup runs (I am using Windows Server Backup temporarily until I can get System Center configured).  The task details currently look like this:

8/10 virtual desktops were successfully recreated.

2 virtual desktops failed.

Desktop-0 Complete
Desktop-1 Complete
Desktop-2 Complete
Desktop-3 Complete
Desktop-4 Failed: Failed to lock VM
Desktop-5 Complete
Desktop-6 Complete
Desktop-7 Failed: The operation has been cancelled.
Desktop-8 Complete
Desktop-9 Complete

Is there anything I can do to get those desktops to recreate?  I didn't have any luck trying to get any of the PowerShell commands I found to do individual desktops this way, and the GUI doesn't appear to have a way to do that.  I haven't tried running the "Recreate All Virtual Desktops" task again because I won't be able to have all users log out before it is interrupted at this time.  While it wouldn't be ideal, should that work?  Additionally, in the meantime, will the two failed desktops continue to function on the old version of the template?

Remote Desktop icons missing on Windows 8 Pro

We have Remote Desktop Services installed on a Windows 2008 R2 server, and the icons for Remote Desktop display fine on the web page for Windows 7 clients, but they are missing for Windows 8 Pro clients.  The text/description shows and you can still click to access the remote desktop, but the icon itself is not displayed.  Any ideas?

Roaming profiles set by GPO fails with no error

Hi All,

I have a Windows 2012 server with all the relevant RDS roles installed and a Windows 2012 file server.

I wish to use Group Policy to set romaing profiles for all RDS users, the policy in question is:

Computer Configuration > Admin Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Session Host > Profiles > "Set path for RDS user romaing profile"

I have set the profile path to be \\TTLCloudFP01\profiles$

This does not seem to create a profile, even after I have logged off and rebooted the server to make sure the GPO is in effect. If I create the profile path in AD profiles section it does create a roaming profie but, if I do this in AD in the Remote Desktop Services section it does not.

No event logs are generated on either the RDS server of my file sever. I am stuck! Can anyone suggest any further trouble shooting I can do to resolve this? I have this exact same configuration working at other sites, but it is all server 2008 R2, I wonder if this is an issue specific to 2012.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

Hi,

I have the below setup.

  • Domain Controller with RD session broker configured in the same server.
  • Two RD Session Host server with Remoteapp which is configured to RD connection broker.
  • One RD gateway server

I am using DNS Round Robin which is configured in Domain Controller. All my servers are Windows 2008 R2 with All updates upto Dec 2012.

Users are correctly logging in to the both server with equal numbers each.

My issue is, when the users starts using the remoteapp application, users are getting disconnecting (logs out from session) randomly. Its about 100 users are using this application at a time. Please help.

2008 R2 Remote Desktop Service: thumbcache.dll grows out of control

$

Hi,

I have a 2008 R2 with Remote Desktop Service role. In 'Users' folder there are 20 profiles and usually all 20 are connected.

I noticed that in a few months some user folders have grown up, but documents and desktop folders are not very big and users cannot install software, so I found that some files have grown up very fastly, at the path C:\Users\%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

and file names are thumbcache_*.dll, it seems they are explorer.exe cache . Some users have these files 500MB+ big, other users only 30-40MB.

How can I programmatically delete these files, so that Windows recreates them? I think that explorer.exe should be stopped before deleting files. Or how can I prevent growing up?

Thank you

Can't log off or reset a user's session from Remote Desktop Services Manager

Occasionally we have users on our RDS servers who have a "frozen" session.  We are unable to reset, log off, or disconnect their session using Remote Desktop Services Manager.  The only way we can resolve the issue is to wait until after hours and reboot the RDS server.  This causes some challenges and leaves the user who needs their session ended waiting until after hours for resolution.  We've run on 2003 terminal servers for years and never had this issue.

Does anyone know of a resolution?

Installing 32-bit app

I'm trying to install a 32-bit app onto a Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit, obviously) Remote Desktop server.  This is an older app that apparently uses an older version of C Runtime.  After putting the server in Install Mode, when I try to install the app, I get this error message:

The file 'C:\Windows\system32\Msvcrt40.dll' could not be opened. Please check that your disk is not full and that you have access to the destination directory.

I have learned that msvcrt40.dll doesn't live in C:\Windows\system32 any more; I found it in C:\Windows\SysWOW64.  I still need to get this app installed, however.  Does anybody have any suggestions?

RemoteFX USB Redirection Prerequistes

Hi All,

I’m really confused about the GPU need for USB RemoteFX redirection:

1-     I’m sure that for RDSH GPU is not needed for USB redirection (W 2008 R2 SP1)

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff817602(v=ws.10)

RemoteFX for RD Session Host server hardware requirements

If you are using RemoteFX on an RD Session Host server, the processor on the RD Session Host server must support Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2). The RemoteFX encoder is optional server hardware, and it can be installed for additional scalability on the RemoteFX server. The hardware encoder card must be installed in a PCI Express x4 slot or greater.

2-     But for USB RemoteFX redirection for VMs hosted in a RDVH server, the RDVH server must  meet the SLAT and GPU requirements (W 2008 R2 SP1)

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff817602(v=ws.10)

RemoteFX for RD Virtualization Host server hardware requirements

SLAT-enabled processor   The processor in the RemoteFX server must support Second-Level Address Translation (SLAT). In virtualization scenarios, hardware-based SLAT support improves performance. On Intel processors, this is called Extended Page Tables (EPT), and on AMD processors, it is called Nested Page Tables (NPT).

GPU   At least one graphics processing unit (GPU) is required on the RemoteFX server. The GPU driver must support DirectX 9.0c and DirectX 10.0. If more than one GPU is installed in the RemoteFX server, the GPUs must be identical. The GPU must have sufficient dedicated video memory that is separate from system memory.

My question is very simple : Do we need GPU and vGPU for RemoteFX USB redirection in the RDVH Windows 2008 R2 SP1 server ?

2012 TS Gateway and UDP

$

I have a 2012 TS gateway for remote access for our Session Host server.

The TS gateway is on the LAN and the Firewall forwards request from our external IP on to the TS Gateway, in the past 2008 and R2 we have just had 80 and 443 open  and it works fine, as it still does on 2012.

I want to enable the 2012 UDP option 3391 so I asked our ISP to also open the UDP port 3391 both ways.

Now RDS doesn't work properly, I can see in the TS Gateway monitoring that clients are connected http and usually 2 UDP connections, The Client when you click on the connection button we get connection is good or excellent and UDP is enabled.

From the Client end the best way to explain the experience is things will work smoothly for a while then hang if you try to resize windows it takes a while to do, what is really interesting is if you set of a video in a portion of the screen this will continue to stream ok whilst the rest fails to redraw correctly.  Also interestingly if you move the Windows Media Player around the video moves around flawlessly but the surround stays where it was originally.

Turn off UDP and things go back to normal, I would like UDP to work because on constrained connections the experience isn't brilliant.

Is there anything I'm doing wrong should I ask for established related through the firewall? is there anything I can look at to see how I can improve this.

If I force an internal client to connect to the Gateway the UDP experience is absolutely fine.

Its a bit frustrating that I can only test this issue remotely.

Any help would be appreciated, as the information on the internet is scanty

Thanks Gordon.

How to connect to someone’s disconnected session without providing credentials?

$

Hello,

We have an AD DS domain with Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual machines. We access virtual servers in the domain through RDC, from our local machines. Currently we have a local account with administrative rights on each server. We share credentials of the admin accounts. So all team members log in with the same user name - administrator. That way it’s easy for us to login to a disconnected session and continue someone’s work. Now I have got a requirement to make everyone to login with him/her own credentials. I need to figure out  how to configure the system to allow a user to connect to someone’s else disconnected session, WITHOUT providing the password. So we need to login securely to remote machines, but disregard the security, taking over disconnected sessions.

Questions:

Is that possible to connect to someone’s disconnected session without appearing a popup window asking for the password?

If yes, how to do that?

I have researched on remote desktop settings, user accounts and group polices without any results so far. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Julia
