Exposing RDS to outside world

We are running server 2008 R2 and I have a default install of RDS. Is it "safe" out of the box to just expose to the outside world? Or is there special configuration "best practice" to apply in order to have an extra layer of security as far as the connection goes. I wouldn't want the user to have to authenticate more than once.

Any ideas?

Windows XP and Remote Gateway with non standard port

I have a W2k8 server with a non-standard port number for RD Gateway. This is now supported under RDP 8. However, it looks like Windows XP can only go to RDP 7.

IF this is true, I assume I won't be able to connect via the gateway on a Windows XP machine. Are there any work arounds or third party clients who can over come this limitation?

Thanks in advance!

Windows Server 2012 and win 8 app on terminal server

On a windows 2012 server, is it possible to install a windows 8 app that can be accessed (via terminal services/remote desktop) by client computers running prior version of Windows, such as 7, Vista and maybe XP? (Obviously without the touch capability). In other words, can a  windows 8 app be accessed via terminal server by other versions of Windows or it must be only Windows 8?

Also, I read that the new RDC can also be downloaded from the Windows Store to a tablet, but what tablet? "Surface" , iPad, Android?

Thanks so much

Hello,

I’ve setup an Remote Desktop deployment in server 2012. Everything works fine except some Certificate warning issues…

I’m set like that :

Server name

-         1 RD Web Access server                              webaccess.network.lan

-         1 RD Gateway                                              gateway.network.lan

-         1 Broker                                                        2012-hstbrk1.network.la,

-         1 Session Host                                              host.network.lan

Certificates :

RD Connection Broker SSO         Trusted                               SSL         gateway.company.com

RD Connection Broker PublishingTrusted          SSL         gateway.company.com

RD Web Access                               Trusted                               SSL         webaccces.company.com

RD Gateway                                     Trusted                               SSL         gateway.company.com

When I try to open a apps on the WebAccess page I receive this 1 warning :

Then I click on connexion, and I receive this message who told me that the certificate of the broker (gateway.company.com SSL) is not the same of the server name (2012-hstbrk1.network.lan) How can I correct that????

Custom RDP settings for remote desktop services 2012

Hi,

We deployment a RDS 2012. We used the older version (Windows server 2008 R2) in the past. Now I wonder why i can't find the custom rdp settings from server 2012. We have only one server for RDS and there are installed roles: RD Web Access, RD Connection Broker and RD session host.

We should define "shell working directory" -command to the custom rdp settings. Should I use a powershell? If so how to do?

Best regards,

Powerpoint 2010 fullscreen not working when using Aeroglass over RDP

Hi All,

Today i discovered a problem with Powerpoint 2010 running in a Remote Desktop Services environment (2008R2 SP1).
When the Aero glass theme is used within the RDP session, PowerPoint 2010 prevents to play a Presentation in Full screen.
The screen gets black and doesnt play the Presentation. Also when returning to Powerpoint with the "ESC" key, the RDS screen gets a little scrambled.

When switching to the "Windows 7 Basic Theme", Powerpointplays the presentation as it should.

Anyone familar with this problem? Is there a fix for this?

Remote Desktop Gateway - Works from some locations but not others

Ok, re-trying this question, with more accurate information.

I have a client with a RemoteApp and RDGateway services facing the public internet.  The conditions are these:

1)  Able to log in successfully to the initial RD Web Access web page from any external location.  No issues are being reported internally.

2)  Able to launch published apps successfully only from some external locations.

3)  Using same user credentials, launching published apps from other locations results in "This computer can't connect to the remote computer because the Terminal Services Gateway server is temporarily unavailable" error.

4)  From the same locations where launching a published app fails, I am able to make a direct RDP connection to the server running Gateway and RemoteApp services using the native RDP client in Windows.

5)  There is no common ISP in the mix.

6)  As far as I can tell, there is no CAP or RAP in effect that would cause only selective clients to connect

7)  The client is using a DigiCert ssl certificate, not a self-signed cert.

8)  The RD Broker service is installed and running.

Can anyone hazard a guess as to why this would be working from some external locations, yet produce the above-noted error at other sites?  I will be happy to provide any additional information that mau be needed ... but I just don't know where to start looking.

Regards and thank you in advance.

Hi,

I have an Hyper-V Host based on Windows Server 2012 Datacenter. I also installed a new Nvidia Quadro 4000 card with the latest Win2012 drivers.

In Hyper-V Setting the card can be selected as GPU. I also can add the RemoteFX Card to the VM-Settings - but in the VM i can only the "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" on two "Unknown Devices".

As VM I tried Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 8 Professional. All the same. I'm not able to get the VM runnig with the RemoteFX driver.

The CPU support SLAT. The OnBoard VGA is disabled.

Here the VM - Settings:

I have 2 x RDSH, the load balancing works ok. However as an administrator, when I want to connect to RDSH1 through mstsc on my laptop, I am actually taken to RDSH2, how do I stop this from happening?

Hi,

I’ve installed Remote Desktop Session on a Windows 2012 server and all the session limits is set to “never” including Idle Session Limit, but the session times out with the message “Your Remote Desktop session ended because the remote computer didn’t receive any input from you”. The remote client is a Windows 7 embedded Thin Client

RDP clients 5.1 to RDS 2008 R2

Hi, I have run into an issue what is a bit odd.

We have a client that uses handheld scanners that run windows mobile 5.1 that connects to a RDS server running Server 2008 R2

Now when we had the RDS in Evaluation mode the scanners would connect with no issues.

Now that we have it properly licensed it gives us the error of "Because of a security error, the client could not connect to the remote computer.  Verify that you are logged onto the network and then try connecting again"

Now from what I have been looking at is it seems that anything that uses and rdp client prior to 6.1, will cause this error, the devices being 5.1

Now my issue is, no where could I find any limitations of stating that the rdp clients had to be a certain version.

Does anyone know if there is something posted online by microsoft, indicating for RDS running on 2008 R2 any limitations for the clients?

RDS 2012 - Certificate Setup

Hi experts!

Servername:Roles:

RDGW1.domain.localWebAccess, Gateway, Licensing, Broker

RDSH01.domain.localSession Host

RDS02.domain.localSession Host

External URL to WebAccess Server: remote.domain.com

Ok, so far so good.

Now we want to secure this setup with 3-party SSL certificates.

I have Binged my ass off, but cant really find any good answers.

How/where do I create certificate requests for my RDS servers?

Is it only on RDGW1.domain.local i do a request for remote.domain.com, or must it be a wildcard or SAN cert deployd to all three servers?

any hints would be appreciated, thanks!

Cannot Open Outlook on Terminal Server

Windows 2003 R2 SP2 Terminal Server with Outlook 2007 SP2 using Exchange 2007 SP2. User gets the “Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window.” error when trying to open Outlook. Seems to be a not so uncommon problem on client machines but not in a Terminal Server environment, so the 'no default gateway on client' and the /resetnavpane thing among others do not apply. On local pc, no problems. Any clues would be appreciated.

Only one RDP session allowed

We have a Windows 2003 server in administration mode (Remote Desktop for Administration). Only one person is able to connect at a time. We're connecting from Win 7 RDP. No changes or special configuration for client sessions have been made, just using the default configuration. We often have more than one person that needs to get on this server. Any thoughts?

Can AD LDS be used to specify User and Group rights in RDS Remote Apps?

Hi all,

I have a situation with a leased remote stand-alone dedicated Web Server that is also running Remote Desktop Services. It is accessed via the Internet. All our RDWeb users connect over the public internet. This server is not a DC or connected to any AD Domain. I have been advised in another forum that I should not install AD DS on this configuration with a Public IP address on the NIC.

As a result when I try to assign user rights to a particular published remote App in RDWeb I get the error.

"The RD Session Host Server is not joined to an Active Directory domain..."

Can I somehow use AD LDS to assign user rights (or deny them) to certain published remote Apps in RDS?

Thanks for any help

2008 Terminal Server CALs with 2003 Terminal Server

$

Hi

Can someone please help me with this problem?

Searching around, I've found some information, and I believe a 2008 terminal licensing server can issue 2008 TS user CAL's to a 2003 terminal server and they will allow users to login, thus not requiring me to purchase any 2003 TS user CAL's.

Anyway, here's the problem. We have a 2008 terminal server which is also acting as a licensing server with 50 2008 TS user CAL's installed and everything works OK. In the 'License Program' it says the type is 'Open' (I assume because we purchased our licenses on a volume licensing agreement).

We have a need to install a 2003 terminal server and allow users to connect to it, etc. I've placed the 2003 server in the same domain as the 2008 machine, and if you go into licensing manager you can see the 2003 machine, however in the 'TS CAL Version and Type' field it says 'Temporary TS Per Device CALs' and the 'License Program' says 'Temporary'.

Someone told me that I need to make the 2003 server the licensing server and install the 2008 CAL's on that, but I don't know, it's all very confusing. Can someone tell me what I need to do to resolve this, or is just that I need to purchase 2003 TS user CAL's?

Many thanks

Mr Bojangles

The Terminal Server security layer detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client.

Has anyone come across this and know what this means? from what I can gather from users at remote sites (hardware VPN) they freeze and then it attempts to reconnect - after a minute it reconnects back to the session. Could this be a license cal issue?

Thanks

Setting up Remote Desktop Gateway on Small Business Server 2008

$

I am trying to install the RD Gateway Server service role on a Windows Small Business Server 2008.  When I try to add the role of "Remote Desktop Gateway" in Server Manager, the 'role' does not show up as a option.  I am guessing that because it is a Small Business Server 2008 R2 rather then a windows Server 2008 R2, that the option is not available.  However I have not been able to confirm this on any Internet searches.

Can anyone confirm this is the case?

Thanks

Jack Creed
